Strong in teaching and academy, the various science schools and departments at Renmin University of China (RUC) are always somewhere for excellence. Let’s have a look at how RUCers display their talents in the world of numbers!

Bie Ruofan,Undergraduate of the School of Statistics

Bie Ruofan participated in the “Mingde Data” Program as a third-year student of the School of Statistics under the recommendation of her supervisors. For her, the program offered not only the tools for prudent academic research, but the opportunity to get access to the international frontiers. In the first summer after joining the program, she was able to engage in a two-month exchange at Yale School of Public Health, which opened the gate for her later academic career on the international stage. Bie never squandered her chances and talents, and managed to publish an article on an A-class international journal as an undergraduate. She is currently pursuing her PhD study at Brown University after getting the Master of Science in Health Data Science at Harvard University.

Chen Shizhe,Bachelor-straight-to-doctorate student of the School of Information 

With a dazzling list of top journal publishes, nominations for best papers and titles of international academic competition winner, Chen Shizhe is literally a demonstration of a straight-A student. Her passion for NLP studies was put into full display in various research projects, including national and international ones, during her PhD at RUC and now as a postdoctoral researcher at the French National Institute of Computer and Automation (INRIA). In 2022, she was nominated for the most influential scholar in the multimedia field by AMiner.

Liu Shuang,Doctoral Student of the School of Mathematics 

Liu Shuang was dedicated in the study of partial differential equations and biomathematics, who is the main author of multiple publishes on major national and international academic journals. By successfully solving the public questions raised by renowned mathematicians such as Berestycki, Hamel, Nadirashvili, Hutson, Michaikow, and Polacik, he has gained an international recognition for his academic capability. “Mathematics is an art of ingenuity.” said Liu, “I will continue my pursuit for the light of academy with perseverance and order.”

Doctoral Student of the Department of Physics

Xu Xiaoqi,Doctoral Student of the Department of Chemistry 

As the winner of several national/unversity-level scholarships and author to 16 research papers in international journals, Xu Xiaoqi is by no means a “bookworm”. By combining the expertise with technology, Xu strives to raise the social awareness of science through television and digital platforms. He created and operated the Bilibili account of “RUC Department of Chemistry”; participated in the operation of the Wechat official account of “RUC Chem”, creating a total of 11 videos; and organized the first RUC Chemistry Culture Festival.

Wang Tong,Doctoral Student of the Institute of Statistics and Big Data 

As a dual Ph.D. owner, Wang Tong is a real beneficiary of the doctoral training program co-organized by the RUC Institute of Statistics and Big Data and the Department of Statistics of Texas A&M University (TAMU). During his Ph.D. studies, Wang mainly engaged in research on issues related to clinical trial design, and collaborated with his supervisor to publish “The impact of misclassification on covariate-adaptive randomized clinical trials” in the statistical journal Biometrics. In the US, he focused on survival analysis. After graduation, he continued his research and teaching at the School of Statistics and Data Science, Nankai University.

Wang Hanzhi,Undergraduate and Bachelor-straight-to-doctorate Student of the School of Information 

Wang Hanzhi majors in big data science and engineering, who has published 5 A-class papers of China Computer Federation (CCF) as the first author within two-and-a-half years of doctoral study. Her research mainly focuses on the large-scale graph analytics and learning algorithms. Centering on the idea of “introducing controllable errors to reduce the time complexity of big data algorithms”, she successfully reduced the computational complexities of various graph analysis and learning algorithms to approximately optimal. It is worth mentioning that she also successfully optimized the computational complexity of PageRank contributions to solve the problem raised by Turing Award winner Professor John Hopcroft in 2007.

NoPassCET4,The first “OceanBase Database Contest” champion team

The “NoPassCET4” team, composed of three RUC students, Huang Renhuang, Tu Jianhong and Wang Yuanzhe from the School of Information, won the national championship in the first “OceanBase Database Competition” jointly organized by OceanBase and the Ant Group Academic Cooperation Team. They stood out from 1,179 teams from 246 renowned universities domestically and abroad.

In this competition, RUCers fully demonstrated their solid database system development capabilities. Moreover, these students also achieved outstanding outcomes in the frontier research topics of database and data management. Tu focused on data integration and developed an entity matching algorithm with low labeling cost and high integration accuracy, which significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches to entity matching. Huang and Wang participated in the “Key Technology Cooperation Project of Distributed Database for New Hardware” in cooperation with Huawei, and developed a high-performance database prototype system FUSEM based on a new type of non-volatile memory. The performance of FUSEM is 60% higher than that of mainstream in-memory database systems.
